Filmmaker John Singleton, known for directing “Boyz n the Hood,” will be taken off life support Monday after spending days in a coma, his publicist said.
The 51-year-old famed director had suffered a stroke on April 17 while at Los Angeles hospital for another health concern.
“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today,” his family said in a statement shared by his publicist, Shannon Barr, on Monday. “This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors. “
In 1992, Singleton became the first black director nominated for an Academy Award and, at 23, the youngest nominee in that category for the critically acclaimed 1991 drama “Boyz n the Hood,” his directorial debut.
This statement from the family comes after a morning filled with confusion, after stories of Singleton’s demise went viral.
