Nearly two weeks after he was brutally murdered in the parking lot of the strip center he owned in his neighborhood, Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom was honored by more than 21,000 people in the Staples Center.
In a massive celebration that included performances from Marsha Ambrosius, Stevie Wonder and Jhene Aiko, Nipsey’s legacy was spoken of fondly. Beyond the music, Hussle was an activist, and a staunch proponent of the empowerment of the people in Crenshaw, an area that he held close to his heart.
On March 31st, Hussle was shot six times in the parking lot in front of his Marathon Clothing store. The alleged shooter, Eric Holder Jr, has pled not guilty to the charges. Since the shooting, fans have made the journey to the strip center, turning it into a memorial. The parking lot is almost completely covered with candles, photographs
To honor his legacy the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson will be renamed Nipsey Hussle Square, and his legacy will officially be documented in history.
Today, Hussle will finally be laid to rest in a private ceremony.
